Peggy Bertels Named Senior Independence President
Peggy Bertels has been appointed President of Senior Independence, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS). Bertels was unanimously elected by the Senior Independence Board of Directors. Bertels, who is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began on February 13, 2012.
“After a national search, we have found the best person and the most qualified candidate to lead our Senior Independence professionals,” said OPRS President/CEO Laurence C. Gumina. “Peggy’s strong leadership within the home health and hospice industries will be an asset to Senior Independence’s future growth.”
Bertels most recently served as the Vice President of Operations for Life Choice Hospice, a multi-state hospice company affiliated with Genesis HealthCare. In this position, she led numerous acquisitions and orchestrated start-up operations for Life Choice sites along the Eastern Seaboard. She is also a 2012 Board Member at Pennsylvania Hospice Network. Prior to her leadership at Life Choice Hospice, Bertels served as the Vice President of Operations at Guardian Health, the Regional Director of Operations at Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice, and served nine years as the Regional Vice President of Integrated Health Services’ Hospice Division.

Bertels has earned a master’s degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Webster University in Kansas City, Missouri, and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois.
Statewide, Senior Independence offers services to more than 90,000 older adults in Ohio and operates 12 adult day centers. Senior Independence also manages six senior centers in partnerships with local governments.
